Czechoslovak Armored Fighting Vehicles 1918-1948, Charles K. Kliment & Vladimir Francev
Schiffer Publishing Ltd. 77 Lower Valley Road, Atglen, PA 19310, USA
e-mail: Schifferbk@aol.com
ISBN: 0-7643-0145-4
8.5"x11", hardcover, 384 pages with 800+ photographs and line drawings. Some colour illustrations and photos included.

As with other Schiffer books, this one is comprehensive thorough, and detailed. Rather than just launching into the vehicles, the author thoughtfully takes the reader through the formation of the Czech nation, its politics, resources and Czech motor vehicle industry before describing the birth and development of the first Czech AFVs in 1918.

While many people know Czech armor from the popular 38(t) chassis adopted for many German self-propelled guns in WWII, that is only a tiny part of a broad-based Czech armaments industry that has produced everything from armored cars to wheel-and-track hybrids to armored trains. One of these railroad heavies could serve as the basis of an entire James Bond film-they're absolutely astonishing!

The book doesn't stop with vehicles, but also describes the pictures weapons, uniforms, camouflage, artillery tractors, and insignia in colorful detail. The author must have a made a deal with someone at the Czech National Archives to get the photos, because there are literally hundreds that have never been published before.

Bottom line: well written, easy to read, outstanding photos and drawings, overall an important hook.
