CAMOUFLAGE COLORS Wehrmacht Heer: 1939-1945, Thomas Chory. English translation by Charles Kliment. |
The new book from Tomas Chory of the Czech republic could become for the collector of military vehicles what the Monogram Painting Guide is for the airplane modeler.
The amount of information that the author provides in only 70 high quality printed pages in English language is amazing. Apart from the preface and discussion of the actual purpose of camouflage colors, the information about RAL is followed by a short outline about the majority of vehicles of the German army - so far nothing special. It becomes really interesting from page 29; starting from this chapter the book becomes highly interesting. Introduced in short, very informative excerpts in connection with the utilized lacquer finishes, there follow the descriptions of the colors with their exact designations by RAL numbers, the historical recipes for mixing the paints, and their intended purpose. The author also deals briefly with camouflage colors patterns and Zimmerit. At the end of the chapter, there is still another list of the most widely used color patterns, supported by three pages of the camouflage schemes in full color. For the model builder the last sections will be the most interesting. For each color there are given examples on where and how to use it, and comparisons with contemporary modeling paints, such as Humbrol and Revell, supported by a page of paint samples, sprayed on using original paints (not printed). For additional support, there are color photos of original equipment. The last part of the book contains excerpts from the original Wehrmacht’s regulations (in German), with the corresponding listing of the colors in table form. Although even this book does not answer every question on the subject, it is definitely worth every penny of its purchase price, due to its quality of coverage of the topic. |
